BREAKING NEWS: WE HAVE A NEW POET LAUREATE!

Librarian of Congress James Billington has announced that our nation's fourteenth poet laureate is none other than Donald Hall.

Yes, the Donald Hall.

Zarqawi dead and a new poet laureate in the same week...pinch me, I'm dreaming!

I feel safer already.

(This is not meant to disparage previous poet laureate Ted Kooser, who I'm sure did a fine job defending the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.)

The bad news is that his poetry reads like bad prose.

Quick: Name a line from one of his poems that comes into your mind or is quoted in your writings because it succintly expresses what you feel....

Alas, as Goia points out, poetry has become marginalized to a small subculture...no one except for a few NPR listeners, has ever heard of him...
